A single integrated Clinical Portal

The challenge at UCLH was to integrate the Pathology Order Communications system with the existing clinical portal used extensively throughout the Trust. This required seamless integration between the two systems

Sub1 hour turnaround for Emergency Department pathology requests

UCLH is one of largest hospitals in the UK and processes over a million pathology requests each year. The turnaround for Emergency Services requests must be less than an hour. The new system is designed to enhance workflow across over 200 clinical departments through the grouping of standard tests and shortcuts to speed up data entry.

Benefits

For patients...
Each week 100’s of paper specimens are discarded due to:
·         Poor handwriting
·         Wrong specimen bottles
·         Wrong test requests
As a result, patients are being re-bled and tests repeated unnecessarily leading to delays and inconvenience for patients. Electronic requesting ensures the right clinical information for patient safety so there is no ambiguity over what is ordered and all specimen containers are clearly displayed, avoiding unnecessary delays.
For Health professionals...
Standardisation of care pathways Test groups provide an easy, consistent mechanism for following care guidelines and standard operating procedures for the treatment of conditions. The e-requesting system contains over 300 test groups covering Antenatal Care, Critical Care, Elderly Medicine, ED, Multiple Scierosis, Respiratory Care, Thoracics and many more.
Improved Clinical outcomes
The system records the requester, contact details, the responsible consultant and location which makes it easy for the lab to notify clinicians of life-threatening abnormalities. This is improving patient outcomes.
For Managers...
Improved utilisation of costs
The system ensures that every test is allocated to the correct cost centre saving millions of pounds in unallocated costs.
Replacing pre-printed paper request forms with plastic bags will significantly reduce stationery costs.
Improved tracking information means queries and complaints can be more thoroughly investigated and responded to.
And, improved efficiency is seeing the overall number of requests reducing.
