A transformation in pre-analytics
iBHC has supported the implementation of pass-through numbering which has significantly improved turnaround times (TATs) and efficiency within Pathology Sample Reception Areas (SRA) at HSL (part of Sonic Healthcare UK). The pre-analytical stage of diagnostics, particularly within SRA, is critical but prone to errors due to the manual processing of thousands of GP samples daily. Pass-through numbering, already in use for Trust Hospitals acute EPRs, has been extended to GP samples as of February 2023. This integration allows the Automated Tube Registration and Sorting (ATRAS) system to handle GP samples, eliminating the need for manual labelling and registration, thus reducing errors and processing time. The transition required substantial IT development, led by John Rickett, to adapt the T-Quest electronic ordering system and align GP and lab systems. This development, funded by the NCL NIMS-Interoperability Programme, has strengthened the pre-analytical link and overall diagnostic process.
