GP Direct Access Order Communications
TQuest Order Communications was implemented at QEH to replace the paper-based process of GP’s requesting test results. It provides a direct link from the GP’s Practice Management System (PMS) to the Trusts Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). In addition to Pathology ordering it also provides access to a results viewer (Review™) for lookup of both GP and hospital results.
The benefits achieved through the implementation of this system include:
Reduced cost
- reduction in re-testing/re-sampling/duplication
- reduced administration time in request making
Faster communication
- test requests sent electronically
- results received electronically
- Less use of handwriting
- Requests can be tracked through their lifecycle
Improved accuracy in test ordering
- Use of electronic rather than paper methods
- Unauthorised requests prevented through user access
- Patient demographics transferred electronically
- Ability to request additional information
- Ability to restrict orders based on gender or age
- Ability to specify additional information to aid analysis
- More “common” requests presented as initial choices
More convenient
- Grouping together of requests: multi-disciplinary
- Ability to look up previous test results

Tangible Benefits
Tangible benefits from the new system were identified and the initial capital investment (£275k) was returned after 2.5 years of operation.
The implementation of TQuest at QEH is considered a success as much for the non-tangible benefits as the tangible benefits.
